Summary

Lodz Solar team is a scientific research project at Lodz University of Technology. The project aims to create a 100% zero-emission city car, by which anyone could travel while not exposing the environment to pollution. We have created two cars that are powered by solar energy, specifically by solar panels on the roof of the car, thanks to which we can harness the energy of the sun. This is the ideal alternative to classic electric cars, which have extremely limited range and are dependent on the availability of charging stations. Thanks to the use of the newest technologies, the second of our vehicles has a range of 1000 km on one battery charge, with no stoppage. As the first and only in the world, we have created a fully practical, 5-seat electric car, powered by solar energy. Currently, we are the European champions of solar cars. We won this title in the prestigious 24-hours iLumen European Solar Challenge 2022, which are held every 2 years in Belgium on the Circuit Zolder. Throughout the history, we participated also and won in similar races or their sections around the globe. The most well-known contests we can mention about are Bridgestone World Solar Challenge, Australia and Sasol Solar Challenge, Republic of South Africa. Besides conducting research, constructing cars, and upgrading them, we also care about spreading knowledge about ecology, sustainable development and electromobility. We regularly take part in both national and international fairs, competitions, events, conferences, scientific forums, and festivals. We also conduct classes for school students, sharing with them our passion and knowledge. Through our presence and promotion in social media, we support the national WOŚP foundation yearly, which raises money for the purchase of medical equipment for hospitals.

IMPACT STORY

Impacting lifes

The aim of our project was to create an ecological city car capable of replacing traditional vehicles for daily use. Today, we can proudly present a prototype that not only meets but exceeds our expectations, with a remarkable range of 1000 km on a single battery charge—double the typical 400-500 km range of standard electric cars. This achievement, accomplished entirely by students, demonstrates the potential to significantly reduce air pollution if an automotive company were to invest in mass production. Our car is 100% emission-free, showcasing the positive environmental impact such innovation can have. We believe this project could change societal habits, proving that electric cars are not only more ecological but also practical for long distances and cost-effective to drive.
Throughout our journey, we participated in various events, promoting our ecological vision and raising over 15,000 PLN for WOŚP. Our team members sharpened their skills in both technical and non-technical areas, becoming successful engineers committed to making the world greener. Our scientific research and innovations have been shared through numerous published papers, contributing to the broader knowledge base and inspiring future developments.

LEARNINGS

Lessons learned

Engaging in project-based learning can significantly enhance educational experiences. It is essential that projects be implemented in real-life contexts, as this approach allows students to better appreciate the relevance and impact of their work.
We would encourage all to adopt a mindset of perseverance. Challenges and setbacks are inevitable; however, it is crucial not to give up, even when circumstances appear unfavorable. Strive to give your utmost effort, and regardless of the outcome, take pride in your contributions and the learning process itself.
Furthermore, it is vital to maintain active involvement within the team throughout the project. Encourage open communication and collaboration, ensuring that all members understand the significance of their roles. Help them recognize how their individual contributions influence the overall success of the project. This understanding fosters a sense of responsibility and commitment, ultimately enhancing the collective effort.
By embracing real-world applications, cultivating resilience, and promoting teamwork, you will not only enrich your learning experience but also prepare yourself for future challenges.

FUTURE PLANS

What's coming?

One of our key objectives is to create Eagle Three, the next generation of our solar car. This project will allow us to push the boundaries of solar car technology and showcase our engineering prowess.

In 2024, we will compete in the prestigious iLumen Solar Challenge in Belgium. This is our chance to defend our European championship status that we've achieved at the 2022 competition.

To expand our reach and inspire more young people to get involved in eco-technology, we aim to engage with a wider audience through various channels, such as social media accounts, fairs and charity work.

We will continue to participate actively in social and cultural life, sharing our passion for green energy ideas and sustainable mobility. By pursuing these ambitious plans, we demonstrate our commitment to making a positive impact on the future of transportation and the environment.
